It is now over eighteen months since we gathered – on a glorious summer evening – to celebrate my 50 years of priestly ministry and my 75th birthday.  On reaching his 75th birthday a priest has to offer his resignation to the Bishop (as has the Bishop to the Pope).  The Bishop may ask/allow the priest to continue for a time; he has also to make arrangements for the future. Together we have agreed that I should retire from parish ministry in August this year (when I will be in my 78th year).  I hope that I don’t need to say that I will be leaving a parish and people that I love and have tried my best to serve for many years.

In retirement I will still be available for supply duties in Torbay and elsewhere. I will continue to live in Babbacombe, so very much hope to keep in touch with you.

Bishop Mark will be coming to celebrate Mass and meet with you afterwards to talk about how best Chelston will be served after my resignation has taken place.  As you will all appreciate, this meeting can only happen after ‘lockdown’ has ended or been relaxed. There will also be an ‘online’ meeting organised for those unable to come to the church. Notice of these meetings will be given when they are possible.

Please pray for me as I do for you

God bless you and keep you safe in His love.

Fr John
